Mask Flower Overview
Alonsoa meridionalis is an ornamental, perennial species in the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae. These perennial plants are often grown as annuals in the UK for their bright orange flowers. They are similar to those of poppies and they are often used in the cut flower industry. Foliage is oppositely arranged, oval in shape and leaves have toothed edges. This half-hardy species can be grown in mild climates, it does best in rich, well-draining soil. Its recommended to pinch out young growth to encourage a bushy habit. Popular cultivars such as Alonsoa meridionalis ‘Rebel’ have been bred for use in gardens that bloom with bright crimson-red flowers.
