Zinnia Overview

Zinnias provide a vibrant display for a summer garden. A wide variety of sizes and colours are available. The flowers are very long-lasting and tolerant of hot dry weather. They will be standing tall when other plants are wilting. Dead-heading the flowers will ensure a continuous display.

Common problems with Zinnia

Black spot, rust, and powdery mildew. To avoid these, keep foliage dry and soil moist. Zinnias planted too closely together in humid weather are more susceptible to these diseases.

Zinnia Companion Plants

Their ability to attract hummingbirds is also seen as useful as a defense against whiteflies, and therefore zinnias are a desirable companion plant, benefiting plants that are inter-cropped with it.

How to harvest Zinnia

Zinnias make excellent cut-flowers. Pick late afternoon or evening for the vase. Reserve dried flower heads for seeds.

How to propagate Zinnia

Collect dry flower heads. Gently remove seeds and store until the next season. After the last frost, sow directly into sunny garden beds.
