Arabian Jasmine Overview
Jasminum sambac is a highly fragrant, evergreen shrub which produces clusters of white flowers that fade to pink. It blooms mainly in the summer - occasionally at other times too - and has a twining, scrambling habit. It has angular stems and glossy, waxy, dark green leaves. Commonly known by the names Arabian Jasmine, White-Flowered Indian Jasmine and Sambac Jasmine, amongst others. This half-hardy species is ideal for growing in a container in a heated greenhouse or conservatory - that could be taken outside for the summer. It can also be trained to grow along a trellis, making an attractive screen. While it will tolerate full sun outdoors, it needs bright filtered light indoors (but shade from full sun). Grow in neutral soil that is moist but freely draining. Jasminum sambac has earned an RHS Award of Garden Merit and has many named varieties, with single and double flowers. Probably from tropical Asia originally, this plant has ceremonial, medicinal, and herbal uses.
