Prayer Plant Overview

Maranta leuconeura var. erythroneura is a clump-forming evergreen perennial with intricately patterned leaves from the Marantaceae family. It is also known commonly by the names Herringbone plant, Prayer plant, Maranta leuconeura 'Tricolor' and Maranta leuconeura 'Fascinator', amongst others. It will usually grow to around 30cm in height and spread, this natural variant originates from the tropical rainforest floor of Southern America. It is commonly grown as a house plant for its attractively coloured and patterned foliage. Leaves are oval-shaped, dark olive green in colour, measuring around 15cm in length, with a bright green central zone and attractive red venation and midribs. Delicate purple and white flowers are very short-lived, usually opening and closing within a day. The flowers are produced on slender spikes during the summer. It has a clumping habit and is frost-tender, so keep above freezing temperatures. Place in a position of indirect, partial sunlight and well-draining soil for optimal growth. Water when the soil has thoroughly dried out for best results. This plant has earnt a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
