Pilea Overview

Pilea is a large genus containing around 600 species of usually shade-loving, annual or perennial herbaceous plants or subshrubs in the nettle family, Urticaceae. They are typically native to tropical, subtropical and warm temperate parts of the world. Many are succulent, producing fleshy, water-storing leaves, these are usually arranged oppositely on stems. Several species with a variety of habits are popular as houseplants, where they are grown in pots, terrariums, or indoor hanging baskets. Pilea peperomioides and Pilea cadierei are particularly popular plants for indoor growing, these are common houseplants.

Common problems with Pilea

Plants kept indoors are susceptible to Fungus Gnats, Spider Mites, Mealy Bugs and Scale Insects. Those grown outdoors can sometimes be vulnerable to fungal pathogens.
