Sorrel Overview
Oxalis is a large genus comprising around 500 species of annual or perennial flowering plants, spreading via fibrous roots, bulbs or rhizomes. These plants are part of the Oxalidaceae family, they have a worldwide distribution with a centre of diversity in tropical regions of Brazil, Mexico and South Africa. They are characterised by their divided, palmate leaves that resemble clover leaves, and funnel- or bowl-shaped flowers that often close at night or in dull weather. A number of species, cultivars and hybrids are popular in rock gardens, raised beds, an alpine house, or as houseplants. Some are considered very invasive weeds.
