Houseleeks Overview

Sempervivum is a genus of around 40 hardy, evergreen, succulent perennials, also known as Semps, Houseleeks and Liveforever. They form evergreen mats of fleshy-leaved rosettes, often attractively coloured, and produce star-shaped flowers in summer. The highly symmetrical rosettes of thick, fleshy foliage are usually oval and pointed, or strap-shaped. Dramatic, tall, star-shaped blooms with 8-16 petals are produced from the rosettes and these are usually white, pink-purple, red or yellow. Many species and hybrid cultivars are popular house plants. They reproduce via short stolons which grow on the soil surface. Outdoors, Sempervivum species tend to grow across the ground in mats, and some species have white hairs. They like a position in full sun and grow best in dry, gritty, poor soil. They are often seen in alpine houses where they are protected from very wet winters. More recently, they are often seen on green rooves too. Originating from the mountains of Europe and Asia, this genus is native to rocky areas, so Sempervivum are suitable for gravel and rock gardens, scree beds and wall crevices. They also make good container plants and they can be used for ground cover, border edging and ground cover.
