Flaming Sword Bromeliad Overview
Vriesea is a large genus containing around 255 evergreen perennial plants from the Bromeliaceae family. These plants occur in forested and rocky areas at high elevations (to 2,500m high). They are found naturally from Mexico to Tropical America and may be called Flaming Sword Bromeliads. Vriesea plants produce rosettes of attractive strap-shaped foliage, which are often marbled or patterned. Short-stalked flowers are arranged on erect spikes and are surrounded by showy modified leaves known as bracts. The rosette centres are best kept filled with water during the growing season and daily misting is advised. A popular species, Vriesea splendens is often grown as a houseplant, it is known by the common name Flaming Sword.
