Iris Overview
Iris is a large genus containing around 360 species of rhizomatous or bulbous perennial flowering plants in the Iridaceae family. They are native to the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere and found in diverse habitats ranging from arid, semi-desert areas, colder montane regions, meadows and marshes. Leaves are narrow and strap-like and fan-shaped, symmetrical flowers are borne on erect stems. The flower stems are usually unbranched. After the seeds you will find green then brown seed pods. Different species are adapted to diverse environments such as borders, rock gardens, boggy ground, ponds, and woodland. Irises are widely cultivated and many varieties and hybrids are available bred for their attractive showy flowers in diverse often intense colours.
