Pea Overview
Pisum sativum 'Kelvedon Wonder' is a tender climbing annual that produces double green pods containing small and sweet tasty peas that can be eaten straight from the plant or added to a variety of cooked dishes. Also known as Pea 'Kelvedon Wonder' is an early crop variety that produces pods ready to pick from June for 3 to 4 weeks. Keep your peas well picked to encourage more pods to develop. Pick peas in the morning after the dew has dried. They are crispiest, then. When you pick peas, use two hands to prevent accidental tearing or breaking of stems that will prevent other pods from developing. Secure the vine with one hand and pull the peas off with your other hand. Seeds can be sown undercover in early spring or direct-sown in situ when the soil has warmed up. Alternatively, you can direct sow in autumn and overwinter - with protection for an early crop. Newly emerging foliage will need protection from birds and support to climb up. Water regularly when the flowers appear to help the pods to swell. Mulching around the base of plants can help prevent drying out. Peas are a cooler weather crop and hot summer temperatures arrive and put an end to production.
Common problems with Pea
Can be attacked by Mexican Bean Beetles, and Seedcorn maggot. They can also suffer from Seed decay, seedling root rot, wilt.

How to propagate Pea
Seed
Sow seeds in drills 5cm (2") deep and 7.5 cm (3") apart with 60cm (24") between rows. Cover back over and lightly frim - you can use the back of a rake and water the area to settle the soil. Undercover - sow seeds in to lengths of plastic gutter or modular cells. Acclimatise the seedlings before planting out. Gutter sown seedlings can be slid into prepared trenches.
Special features of Pea
Attractive fruits
Crop rotation
Grow Legumes (Peas, Broad, French and Runner beans) in areas that previously held Potatoes (3 year plan) or Onions and roots (4 year plan) and follow with Brassicas. Rotating crops annually helps avoid the build-up of soil pests and diseases.
Other uses of Pea
