Soft Caress Mahonia Overview

Berberis ganpinensis 'Soft Caress' is often better known by the names Soft Caress Mahonia or Oregon Grape 'Soft Caress'. Both referring to the unusually soft foliage. It is an evergreen shrub cultivar from the Berberidaceae family. It has an upright and compact habit, growing to around 1.2m tall. Grown for the foliage more than the flowers, leaves are narrow and spineless in this plant, arranged in groups of 3 leaflets. Flowers are scented and yellow in colour, appearing from summer-autumn, leading onto blue-black berry fruits. Sometimes also sold under other names such as Mahonia eurybracteata 'Soft Caress' or Mahonia eurybracteata subsp. ganpinensis 'Soft Caress'. Due to reclassification, this plant is now considered part of the Berberis genus, but these plants are often still bred and sold separately. This cultivar is part of the Royal Horticultural Society “Plants for Pollinators” initiative to showcase plants which support pollinator populations by providing ample amounts of nectar and/ or pollen. A great choice for encouraging pollinating insect wildlife into your garden!
