About the garden

Vergelegen means "situated far away", and it's not hard to see why. With views of surrounding mountains and a certain amount of charm, it feels as if one has stepped back in time to admire the quiet, beautiful gardens and typical cape dutch architecture. So much so, that Vergelegen has been nominated as a serial World Heritage Site and reflects an authentic depiction of Cape Cultural Heritage.

The age-old Vergelegen gardens have been restored to reflect the best of its history and highlight the contrast between the simple and the bold. You'll find informal spaces with grasses and woodlands and other formally laid out gardens. Vergelegen’s diverse, internationally-acclaimed gardens span 10 hectares- walkthrough the yellowwoods and visit these 18 intimate gardens including a rose garden, a vegetable garden and a wetland garden. You can also find some amazing historic trees, some which date back to the 1700s.

Such a beautiful estate. Did wine tasting (there are plenty of options) and then walked around the gardens which are impeccably maintained. Didn't have enough time to do it justice. Staff were also really friendly. I would've liked a menu that offered food pairings but there seemed only to be wine tasting available. Highly recommended location nice and close to Somerset West.

Beautiful gardens with an abundance of space for walks. Amazing views of the distant mountains. Superb quality food at the restaurants and a fun playground for kids, with shaded benches for relaxed supervision. A touch of history and heritage at the Octagonal Gardens and Homestead, going back 300 years. All in all Vergelegen is a gem of a place.

If you are in Somerset West on a trip, this has to be on your list. This is the second-oldest wine farm in South Africa and it is a perfect place. There is not only wine tasting, but a wine tour, which takes you around the vineyards. There are any amount of walks and three restaurants to suit all taste buds. I highly recommend the Hot Chocolate Experience in the Stables Restaurant - and your kids will love it on a cold day! On a warm day, there is a beautiful play area outside the Stables Restaurant for them to run around and have fun, while you enjoy a cappuccino or a cold drink. This is definitely a place for all age groups!

Very beautiful ancient of days setting. So much care is taken of the building and grounds. The welcome was warm and smiling (despite the masks!) We bought wine and we ate a delicious brunch! In the restaurant. There is a 'pop up' hot dog stand - which is great for children and for those who want to eat quickly and casual. Loved our visit.

So much more than just a wine farm. A lot of history, natural beauty. Felt like I was walking around in a different century, not just a quick visit type of place....if you go you will spend the day! The gardens are so amazing, will put most botanical gardens to shaime.
