About the garden

Situated in the woodland of Staffordshire, near to the Shropshire and Cheshire borders, this large garden has a rich variety of features which will keep visitors coming back in every season. Across the 12 acres of hillside there are many different types of garden, including a woodland quarry with a waterfall, a new winter garden, rose garden walkway, beautiful seasonal beds and an alpine scree.

Created by Colonel Harry Clive in 1940, to provide to wife Dorothy with a ‘series of interesting walks’ as she battled Parkinson’s disease, this garden has continuously evolved over the years and is now a fantastic place to bring the family. The charity behind The Dorothy Clive Garden - The Willoughbridge Garden Trust - manages a larger plot than the Colonel originally envisaged, though the heart of the garden still remains.

Discover collections of rhododendrons, camellias, sarcococca, azaleas and hydrangeas, which bring colour and greenery even in the darkest times of year. Don’t forget to take a trip to the tearooms, where you can find refreshments, or pick up plants at the regular plant fairs (see website for more information).

Take a good look into every corner. Follow all paths. You will be rewarded with a great variety of trees and shrubs, as well as herbaceous plants having the space to impress. There are also some lovely views across country, to enjoy from strategic gaps in the boundary planting. There are even neighbouring horses to see close to the fence. Nice little cafe with friendly staff. Pity about the cost of the food. Always an important measure in my book, is the 'price of a slice'. Not many tourist places pass this important cake based test, but for such a lovely garden, supported by lots of volunteers, we can be very forgiving.

Lovely low key garden. Perfect for pushchairs. Lots to see with places to sit if you get a bit tired. The waterfall is lovely. Really enjoyed it!

Went to the plant sale here yesterday. Very well organised and good range of plants on offer. Pleasant walk around the gardens in the sunshine! Could do with some more sign s to explain the plans that are on show. Disappointed that the cafe was still selling drinks in take away cups!

This is the most beautiful garden with year round interest. Not huge but with so many places to wander, relax and numerous views and vistas. Lovely coffee shop and cafe. Staff are helpful and courteous. What more could you ask!

We visited on Thursday and had the most relaxing and enjoyable day. My husband is being assessed for potential Parkinson’s and this was an ideal location to take him. We had use of the motorised scooter so he was able to enjoy so much of the garden. Thank you.
