About the garden

While much about these award-winning gardens has transformed over the last century, including its size and layout, one thing has remained – its commitment to uphold founder Arthur Kilpin Bulley’s ambition to share the space and its diverse plants with others.

Part of the University of Liverpool, this 64-acre plot offers delightful vistas of the Dee Estuary and houses a major collection of Rhododendrons and Azaleas. Spot fascinating bark markings on the Birches and vibrant Witch Hazel adding a pop of colour against wintery skies. See Magnolias bloom accompanied by spring birdsong, plus the beautiful Mediterranean Banks are not to be missed in summer. Then, revive with a hot meal or sandwich, made from locally sourced ingredients, in The Botanic Kitchen Cafe.

Nowadays, Ness Botanic Gardens increasingly aim to prioritise research, conservation and education of the public, so visitors can also join guided walks and attend lectures to learn more about the gardens.

Very nice gardens. A bit tricky for wheelchairs because of the steep slopes and gravel paths, but manageable. Nice cafe.

Brilliant place to relax, walk and discover. We could've spent longer but we came late afternoon. Staff were friendly and helpful. I think you could easily spend the best part of a day here.

A lovely place looking out across the river Dee, the views a beautiful. There's so much to see all year round. Easy to get to, staff are lovely, and the food in the cafe was lovely. We will be going back time and time again.

I'm not sure I could ever do Ness justice in a review, I think I'd need a full manuscript to explain how beautiful this place is, not just because of the rolling grounds and fabulous flowers, but because of the beautiful people that make it what it is. We chose Ness for our wedding and other than my husband I've never made a better choice! Kate the wedding planner may be the kindest and most capable woman you will ever meet. Martyn the head of catering is a sweetheart and so so good at what he does. And the chef that planned and made our menu was second to none. As was every other staff member we encountered from the day we booked to the day we said goodbye. This is something really special, and I have definitely left a piece of my heart behind. Which is ok, because I'll be returning every chance I get. Thank you truly Ness for being our special place! Sophie & Ste x
