About the garden

Walk along the high stone wall at the front of Levens Hall and you might not suspect that much lies behind, but the garden beyond it is one of the country’s finest and perhaps the world’s best example of topiary. Dating back to the late 17th century, the gardens at Levens Hall retain many of their original features, and with such an emphasis on formal hedging, the results have simply become more spectacular over time. It’s a perfect place to escape the buzz of modern life and retreat to a tranquil and relaxing slice of the past, with fountains, herb gardens, rose gardens, fine lawns and wildflower meadows.

Underplanted with an everchanging display of more than 30,000 bedding plants, with colours shifting throughout the seasons, the surreal living sculptures of the box and yew topiary are impressive in any season, but really pop in summer. Designed by Monsieur Guillaume Beaumont, the gardener of King James II no less, these grounds certainly give the impression of royal lineage, and the vast beech hedging, which is stunning when freshly green in Spring, or startlingly yellow in autumn will also make a lasting impression.

Gardens-only tickets are available, but if you’re able to, it’s also well-worth taking a look inside Levens Hall itself, to discover the fascinating history of this elegant residence.

Well sign posted, easy to find and straight forward parking. The gardens are wonderful, full of colour, perfume and a great variety of plants. The topiary is amazing and the vegetables are cleverly displayed in formal designs. A mixture of stony and grass level paths lead you through. There is a small children's playground in one corner set out on a bark base. Lots of seating at different points from which to take in the many aspects of the gardens. A guided tour of the house is worthwhile and very much sets the scene. This takes about 45 minutes. The cafe is light, airy and spacious with the addition of an outside area. Prompt service. Toilets have easy access and are clean. The shop has a variety of produce and gifts and the plant stall has some treasures. You can easily spend most of a day exploring this beautiful home and the gardens.
