About the garden

Steeped in history yet always evolving, the award-winning gardens at Holker Hall are a must-see if you’re visiting this part of the Northwest – just a short drive from the central Lake District.

There are 23 acres of gardens to explore, with walks like The Cavendish designed to showcase the highlights – from fountains and topiary to evergreens and wildflower meadows. Stand beneath the 400-year-old Great Lime before wandering round the curious Holker Labyrinth. Along with a huge variety of flowers and exotic plants, the gardens are also famous for their beautiful collection of rare Styracaceae.

Each generation of the Cavendish family has left its mark on Holker Hall and Gardens, with the estate never having been bought or sold. Go on a tour of the house before enjoying views of Cumbria’s landscape from the Courtyard Café. You can pick up books on the gardens as well as seasonal plants in the gift shop.

Beautiful gardens, immaculately maintained. Amazing topiary; unusual plants and trees; great variety from section to section. Amazing black ducks with a green translucent tint. It was great to see a large herd of deer in the extensive parkland. Several places to sit and enjoy the beauty. Staff very friendly and helpful.

What a gem of a find. Lovely house, with very knowledgeable staff who offered us a very warm welcome. Beautiful gardens, fabulous topiary, wonderful farm shop, cafe and lovely gift shop. The warmth and friendliness from all the people who work here was what stayed with us. Will definitely return; thank you x

We were greeted by the most amiable of gentlemen, and guided round the house by a couple of delightful ladies, all of whom were fonts of knowledge about this wonderful old house. Well worth a visit, especially as it's having its Christmas decorations put up at the moment. Excellent!!

** Christmas Market** Just been to the 2021 Christmas Market and cannot say enough good things about it. We paid £5 per adult and got the market, a look around the house and gardens in with the price which we weren't expecting. The market was amazing an excellent variety of stalls everybody was in good spirits and a very reasonable price for food and gifts. A massive thank you to Holker Hall staff for the excellent organisation and all the traders we will be back next year.

Raining during our visit to the gardens. We did not visit the house. Gardens very expansive and varied. Very interesting array of plants, scrubs and trees, together with gardens features. Large parkland with deer. Autumn colours not yet a feature but imagine the gardens would be interesting at all times of the year. Good cafe' with open covered area and outdoor seating ( when the sun shines!) Indoor eating as well. Well presented good food but rather expensive.
