About the garden

At the impressive Castle Hill estate, luxuriant gardens cascade down the hillside terraces, with far-reaching views out across the Devonshire countryside. An elegant Palladian-style house sits atop the gardens, which reach out along the hillside with pathways to explore through 50 acres of woodland and parkland.

The gardens are sprinkled with statues, temples and follies, framed beautifully by mature trees and shrubs. In the springtime, head on down to the woods, where a beautiful carpet of primroses lights up the floor beneath your feet, while around you, the blossoms of over 150 camellias, magnolias, rhododendrons and azaleas begin to emerge. In the Millenium Garden, the autumn season sees a lovely display of herbaceous colour, with a lavender border, while at any time of year, visitors can head down to the river and Ugley Bridge, then climb back up to the castle for even more spectacular views.

Stunning house set in beautiful grounds with a small castle ruin at top. Beautiful views well worth a visit. Nice little tea offered. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous grounds, quite steep in places, wonderful views from the high ground, liked the sign posting around the grounds but could do with more as lots of paths. Liked the labels on some shrubs. Generally not suitable for wheelchairs or people with frames, although the grounds near the House are fine. Would have liked the gardens to be kept better esp the Millenium One, enjoyed the water feature. Loved the cafe and food.

Beautifully Presented gardens surrounding the Castle Hill Estate.. We visited on a lovely sunny day and took a 2 hours walk around the gardens up to the castle.. We even spoke to the lady of the house who was tending to the Gardens near the front of the House

Fantastic display of azaleas, rhododendrons, magnolias and camellias in natural landscaping. Beautiful grounds for walking around. Some information about the history of the house and estate would be an interesting addition. Excellent service at reception/tea room!

Interesting gardens to visit. House not open to public. Lovely woodland walks amongst the daffodils, magnolias and rhododendrons. Food available from ticket office. Walked across road to arch...signage and directions to this monument could be improved, however. Recommend.
