Chinese Lantern Overview
Common names for Alkekengi officinarum var. franchetii include Chinese Lantern and Cape Gooseberry, amongst others. It is a herbaceous perennial from the Solanaceae family. This plant typically grows to around 60cm tall. It produces oval, green leaves and insignificant white flowers in the summer. In the autumn, flowers are followed by long-lasting, bright red-orange, lantern-shaped seed pods containing red fruits. Will grow in sun or light shade and prefers well-drained but moist soil. Alkekengi officinarum var. franchetii was previously known as Physalis franchetii and Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii.
