A genus of compact annual and herbaceous perennial plants in the Cyperaceae family native to Africa and Australasia where they are found in cool tropical and temperate zones. There are 77 recognised species in this genus commonly called sedges. They are cultivated as pond marginal plants for their grass-like foliage and spikes of petalless flowerheads.
