Pitcher Plant Overview
Nepenthes is a genus containing around 165 species in the Nepenthaceae family. These plants are mainly epiphytic, evergreen, insectivorous, perennial climbing plants and they originate from East Asia. Commonly known as Pitcher Plants, they are distinguished by their modified leaf midribs that form jug-shaped, lidded, pendant traps that capture and digest passing insects. In cool climates they must be grown under glass in a humid environment, usually in hanging baskets. They have pendulous habits and are tender, so keep above freezing temperatures, plant in a position of full to bright sun and well-draining, moist soil for optimal growth.
