A genus of 12 perennial herbaceous and shrubby species that are often grown horticulturally as annual plants. Growing from 30-100cm, they have small, oval, serrated leaves and flower colours range from reds, oranges and yellows to white and blue. Naturally they grow in sloped stony areas and scrubland in tropical and subtropical Central and Western South America.
