About the garden

Depending on your age, you’ll either recognise the beautiful Tintern countryside from Wordsworth’s poem Tintern Abbey or the Netflix series Sex Education. Either way, it’s easy to see why both were set in these lush rolling hills, which also happen to be the home of Veddw House Gardens.

With its dramatic use of ‘block planting’ and bold use of hedging, this garden manages to excite modern sensibilities while paying homage to the past. You’ll find references to the site’s history everywhere, from the bench carved with the names given to the house and gardens over the years to the parterre of grasses echoing the hedgerows found on a local Tithe Map from 1842. At the meadow and in the wild garden, ancient grassland has been conserved and has remained untouched for generations.

Bordered by thick woodland, the ornamental garden consists of a labyrinth of crisscrossing hedges containing a series of garden rooms. A particular highlight is the dramatic reflecting pool, a perfect spot for visitors and gardeners to take a well deserved break.

Veddw was also featured as an inspirational garden on Alan Titchmarsh’s ‘Love Your Garden’ and Escape to the Country. It also appears in Carolyn Mullet’s new book, ‘Adventures in Eden, An Intimate Tour of the Private Gardens of Europe’.

The garden that stops you in your tracks. Amazing structural hedges mirroring the landscape and wildlife friendly and relaxed planting. Well worth taking it all in slowly.

A unique combination of sculptural topiary and carefully chosen flowers. No matter how many gardens you've seen, Veddw House Garden is well worth a visit.

Eclectic, eccentric and inspiring. Set in a beautiful Welsh valley, a hidden gem. Note, there are toilets, but no cafe.

An interesting garden with some very arty design features and sculptural hedging , however as a keen gardener I found the planting far too informal for my tastes, and it had an unkempt feel , not what I was expecting and the entry fee of £7 was not worth it in my opinion as you couldn't really spend more than 50 minutes there so really not worth it . I would be happy to pay up to £4 or the entry fee should include some kind of refreshment .
