About the garden

Elton Hall is a splendid early 19th century baronial hall, situated in Elton, Cambridgeshire, with extensive grounds that flow down towards the river Nene. The large gardens, which themselves are dwarfed by an enormous estate have expanded from moated grounds to the formal parterres in place today - these were then extended in the 19th century to take in views of the surrounding parkland and woods. The gardens reflect a variety of planting styles, with modern and Edwardian influences.

There is year-round interest in the form of the immaculate yew and hornbeam hedges, which protect four separate gardens, amongst lawns and gravel paths. There is also a noteworthy new flower garden which is designed to stay in bloom until the early Autumn. Towering masses of Veronicastrum and Thalictrum are underplanted by Asters, Monardas, Phlox and Salvias. Elsewhere, the Orangery is host to a wealth of Mediterranean plants, leading to a small enclosed space with spring-flowering shrubs. Of particular note at Elton Hall is the topiary - the family dog standing astride a great yew drum which takes pride of place outside the house is not to be missed!

The gardens here are superbly maintained and lovely to walk around. A fine gardener must run them. They deserve 5 stars. The house rambles pleasantly and has interesting contents, especially paintings and books. Only the block on indoor photography prevents me giving 5 stars.
