Aspen Overview
Populus tremula is commonly known as Aspen or Quaking Aspen, it is a hardy, deciduous tree species from the Salicaceae family. Quaking Aspen is a large tree that forms a broad crown and can spread through suckers. It produces bronze-tinged young growth. The rounded leaves have toothed edges and also display attractive autumn colouration, turning yellow and red. The bark is grey in colour, with diamond-shaped markings and the stems brown. Grows well in full sun and moist to poorly draining soil. Male trees produce green, brown-grey-coloured, woolly flowers on hanging catkin structures. Females flowers are smaller, coloured green, leading onto capsules containing fluffy seeds.
