Hyacinth 'City Of Haarlem' Overview

Hyacinthus orientalis 'City of Haarlem' is a spring-flowering deciduous bulbous perennial that produces highly fragrant, yellow flowers on yellow-green stems that have earned a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. Also known as Hyacinth 'City of Haarlem', these typically grow to around 25cm high and have glossy green leaves that are linear to strap-shaped in appearance with an upright growth habit. Easy to grow, this showy plant prefers a spot in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Ideal to grow in containers and flower beds and borders, these bulbs can be 'forced' to flower out of season, giving us fragrance and colour throughout the year, but especially over winter. Plant bulbs in autumn 15cm (6") deep and spaced 10cm (4") apart - however, container-grown bulbs can be placed closer together. Keep the soil moist during the growing season. Forced or prepared bulbs are often treated as annuals but can be planted out and revert to their normal flowering time after 1-2 years. Allow the foliage to die back naturally, giving the bulb time to fatten up for the following year. Hyacinths can naturalise when growing in the right spot.
