Christmas Rose Overview

Semi-evergreen perennial species with a flowering height of around 30cm. Foliage is pedately lobed, rigid and coloured dark green. Very distinctive bowl-shaped flowers with tapered petals are either pure snow white or flushed with pink, hence the common name Christmas rose. These flowers measure around 8cm wide and have many yellow anthers in the centres. This plant is ideal for heavy clay areas in partially shaded locations.

Common problems with Christmas Rose

Hellebores can also suffer from black rot and from black death which appears as black streaking and mottling between leaf veins, or black marks in a ringspot pattern down the leaf stalks.

How to harvest Christmas Rose

Generally not harvested, flowers can be taken for floral arrangements.

How to propagate Christmas Rose

Sow into pots on a cold frame as soon as the seeds are ripe.
