Hebe 'Red Edge' Overview
Hebe 'Red Edge' is a rounded evergreen shrub with a dwarf habit that is commonly grown for its foliage, at least as much as for its flowers. It forms a dense mound of small, oblong blue-grey leaves with red edges, In summer, spikes of pale mauve flowers - that fade to white - sporadically appear, but it is for the deep red wine colouring of its foliage in winter that it is mostly chosen. This hardy cultivar can cope with freezing weather but likes a sheltered position in full sun to partial shade, in well-draining soil (that is neutral-alkaline). It can be grown in large containers, in mixed borders, used for groundcover, or grown as a low hedge. It will tolerate coastal conditions and pollution well. Hebe 'Red Edge' has earned an 'RHS Award of Garden Merit' and is part of the RHS “Plants for Pollinators” initiative to showcase plants that support pollinator populations by providing ample amounts of nectar and/or pollen. A great choice for encouraging pollinating insect wildlife into your garden! These plants have been re-classified as being part of the Veronica genus and their name change was announced by NATAG (RHS Nomenclature and Taxonomy Advisory Group) in the December 2020 edition of The Plant Review.
