Purple Clematis Overview
Clematis viticella is a summer flowering species that produces purple, blue or rose-red flowers with cream-yellow anthers in the centre. Flowers are bell-shaped with open petals and can reach a size of 4cm across. This hardy species is deciduous and thus loses its green foliage over the winter and regrows new leaves in the spring. It has a climbing habit and may be effectively trained around structures such as a trellis or wall.
Common problems with Purple Clematis
Generally pest and disease free. Aphids may target new growth. May also be attacked by slugs and snails cutting through the base of shoots. It can also suffer from powdery mildew and clematis wilt.
