Cast Iron Plant Overview
Aspidistra elatior is a herbaceous perennial plant from the Asparagaceae family. Growing from rhizomes, this is a common species. The leaves are tough and dark green; they are pointed at the tip. The flowers are cream to dark purple and bell-shaped. Commonly known by the names Cast Iron Plant and Common Aspidistra, amongst others. Cast Iron Plant has been used as an indoor plant for many years and can be used as a garden plant for heavily shaded areas, down to -5 degrees Celsius. Aspidistra elatior needs little care and attention, growing slowly in shaded spots with ease, it can survive for over 50 years.
