Lettuce Overview

Lactuca is a genus of 147 recognised species of annual, biennial and perennial herbaceous plants and some shrubs in the Asteraceae (Asteraceae) family. This genus has a worldwide distribution and a centre of diversity in temperate Eurasia. Commonly known as lettuce, the genus includes cultivated species grown as edibles and some common weeds, with daisy-like flower heads in yellow, blue or white.
