Yellowroot Overview
Xanthorhiza is a monotypic genus comprising of only one species; Xanthoceras simplicissima or yellowroot. It is a deciduous spring-flowering subshrub found in the wild in the Eastern USA where it grows in dappled shade often at water’s edge. In cultivation it is grown for its unusual growth habit, where the toothed leaves and star-shaped flowers are carried only on the top of its otherwise branchless stem.
