Lilyturf Overview
A genus of 60 to 70 species of small, tufted rhizomatous evergreen perennial plants in the Asparagaceae family native to Southeast Asia where they are found in warm temperate and tropical zones. At first glance they resemble grasses but are not closely related to the Poaceae (true grass) family; they are lilioid monocots and collectively are known as lilyturf. Some species, notably O. planiscapus (black mondo) are commonly grown as ground cover plants for their attractive black foliage and spikes of bell-shaped mauve flowers followed by black berries.
