Chilli / Peppers Overview

Capsicum is a genus composed of around 10 evergreen subshrubs, shrubs and perennial species from the Solanaceae family. They are often grown as annuals and harvested for their edible fruits. These plants are often called Chilli or Peppers. This genus contains very well known agriculturally important food crops, such as Bell Peppers and Chillies and this genus is cultivated worldwide. Bell-shaped or tubular flowers are produced from the leaf axils, which develop into chambered fruits that may be green, yellow, or orange. Many, many cultivars and varieties have been developed from these plants, some produce brightly coloured fruits, which are grown for the edible fruits or used ornamentally as houseplants in window-boxes, patio containers, or in greenhouses.
