Stock Overview

Malcolmia is a genus with around 171 species in the Brassica family, Brassicaceae. Native to Europe and Africa, it includes mostly annual herbs, with some biennial and perennial herbaceous plants and subshrub species. They are typically cultivated for their heavily scented, colourful flowers. Plants are usually covered in hairs, which may be simple or branched. Foliage is rounded to lance-shaped, grey-green in colour and the delicate, pretty flowers are arranged in clusters. These are 4-petalled and vary in size across species. Typically they are some shade of white, red, pink or purple and most are scented. Their flowering season lasts from late spring through to early autumn and these are good for planting together to provide dense colouring to a garden area. Easily self-seeds, these are well placed at the edges of paths, in rockeries and in containers. Deadheading the flowers after they are spent will act to encourage a bushy, branched habit and repeat flowering.
