Mertensia Overview
A genus of between 45 and 62 species of herbaceous perennial plants in the Boraginaceae family native to North America and parts of Asia with a centre of diversity in the Rocky Mountains where they inhabit alpine, subalpine and montane zones. They have usually grey-green or glaucus leaves and tubular or open-trumpet shaped blue flowers. Commonly cultivated species such as M. virginica have become naturalised in parts of Europe. They prefer a shady spot.
