Love-in-a-Mist Overview
Nigella is a genus comprising around 18 species of upright, bushy annual flowering plants in the Ranunculaceae family. They are native to parts of Southern Europe, North Africa, South and Southwest Asia. These plants produce finely-divided leaves and purple, blue, or white flowers with 5 petal-like sepals and feathery bracts, followed by decorative seedpods. Commonly known as Love-In-A-Mist, some species are cultivated as popular cottage garden plants. They have attractive ornamental seed heads with a thistle-like appearance, which can add great interest to any garden.
