Kenya Hyacinth Overview
Dracaena is a succulent, evergreen perennial species in the Asparagaceae family. It was previously well known as Sansevieria parva and is often still sold as such. Patterned leaves are narrow and curve, growing to around 40cm in length and 2.5cm wide, they are arranged in rosettes. Leaves are mid-green in colour with darker green crossbanding across the surface. It typically grows with an upright habit when young, becoming semi-weeping with age and size. Probably the toughest and most tolerant houseplant you can find, Sansevieria species are virtually indestructible and a great choice for the beginner gardener. Commonly known by the name Kenya Hyacinth, this plant was also once called Sansevieria bequaertii and Sansevieria dooneri at different times, both of which are now considered synonyms. It thrives on neglect and is drought tolerant, disliking excessive watering (drench once a week and allow to dry out between watering's). Short spikes of small fragrant tubular pink-white flowers can appear in summer.
