Wax Plant Overview

Hoya fungii is also known by the name Wax Plant. It is a climbing vine species in the Apocynaceae family, that produces thick, waxy leaves. Hoya blooms are among the most exquisite blooms in creation! The white/pale pink star-shaped blooms look almost unreal - they resemble porcelain flowers - and have a delicate fragrance at night. They are often grown indoors as house plants and like a bright humid environment. They are originally from the tropics where they grow in trees. They are fast-growing and respond well to pruning. They will need well-drained, humus-rich soil. Keep them well-watered during the growing period in the spring and summer and less during winter. Propagation can be by root cuttings in late spring to early summer, semi-ripe cuttings in summer or seeds indoors year-round.

Common problems with Wax Plant

How to propagate Wax Plant

Take 7cm stem tip cuttings in spring, they should include at least 1 pair of leaves. Hoyas will root easily in moist potting mix.

Air-layering can be done in spring or summer

Special features of Wax Plant

Indoor plant

Bright indirect light year-round is needed, some direct sun is fine, but shade plants from harsh summer sun, which can scorch foliage. Hoyas will live in low light, but will not bloom.

Pot plant

Hoyas like an open potting medium that allows some air to get to the roots. Typical mixes include large-grade drainage material such as perlite, pumice, or ceramic balls.
