Gypsophila is a genus of over 150 hardy annuals or perennials, with some semi-evergreen species. Originally from dry, stony slopes, alpine (and other) varieties are popular with gardeners. Well-known in the UK as a cut flower, Gypsophila paniculata is often used by florists. This species - also known as Baby's Breath - produces extensive cloud-like blooms that provide a good backdrop for other blooms. Gypsophila's individual flowers are small, have five petals and are typically white or pink - often resembling fluffy clouds! Its leaves are variable across species. Gypsophila likes a sunny position, prefers a neutral to slightly alkaline soil and generally dislikes being in wet soil during the winter months.
