A genus of around 30 monocot species endemic to Australia, they are long-lived and slow growing and survive bushfires and poor dry soils. They are prized by Australian Aboriginal people as a valuable resource with multiple uses. They are cultivated mainly for their attractive grassy foliage emerging from the top of a short thick trunk.
