Phlox is a commonly cultivated genus, comprising annual or herbaceous perennials and evergreen shrubs. They are mostly found in North America, where they grow in alpine tundra, open woodland, and prairie habitats. Their colourful and often scented flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. They are grown for their clusters of flat, salver shaped sweet-smelling flowers that come in a variety of colours. Their diversity of habitats in the wild is also reflected in the different niches they can occupy in gardens, from rockeries to damp shade and waterside areas. Annuals are particularly useful for bedding.
