Pampas Grass Overview
Cortaderia is a genus containing around 25 evergreen and semi-evergreen perennial grass species, forming large tufts of long, flat, stiff leaves with rough margins. Originating from grasslands located near waterways in New Guinea, New Zealand and South America, this genus is characterised by tall, silvery, attractive white or pink plumes of feathery inflorescences, borne on tall stems. These plants are widely cultivated as ornamental grasses (that need a lot of space), they are commonly referred to as Pampas Grass and used as single specimen plants or to add height when placed at the back of garden borders. Also useful in flower arrangements.
