A genus of more than 50 species of herbaceous perennials and woody subshrubs in the Lamiaceae (mint, dead nettle) family native to temperate regions of Eurasia, North Africa and North America where they are found in open or mountainous habitats. They are characterised by having aromatic foliage and inflorescences carrying small trumpet-shaped flowers with long-lasting coloured bracts. Some species are used as culinary herbs and there are cultivars and hybrids developed for variegated foliage and a variety of growth habits.

Propagate by division in spring, by cuttings of non-flowering shoots in early summer.
