Beetroot Overview
A small genus of less than 10 annual, biennial or perennial species with thick fleshy roots. It includes the widely cultivated food, the common beet, Beta vulgaris. Flowers grow in long inflorescences and aren't very showy, producing discrete green flowers. Growing best in hot, dry conditions this genus evolved from grassland and coastline regions of the Mediterranean and Europe.
