About the garden

Wildekrans Country House is a historic 1811 homestead situated in the village of Houw Hoek in the Western Cape. Overlooking a rambling garden that cascades to the river, and silhouetted by a rugged mountain backdrop, the house is furnished with antiques and contemporary South African art.

Accommodation with breakfast and dinner is available as is a self-catering option. For those travelling on business, all rooms have MNet and WiFi. The homestead has three double rooms including a suite. A separate cottage alongside the homestead is perfect for families or travellers wanting kitchen facilities. Quirky, burnished by the years, Wildekrans Country House offers a relaxing interlude away from the hurly-burly of city life.

Just one hour from Cape Town it is an ideal weekend getaway, or extension to a Mother City visit.

Wildekrans Country House was our base for 4 nights whilst walking the Green Mountain Trail. A beautiful and comfortable house which immediately made one feel at home. Alison Green is a wonderful hostess and her staff are friendly and helpful. Meals were delicious and in beautiful settings, in garden or dining rooms. Highly recommended.

The guest house itself is gorgeous. We stayed in the garden room which had a magnificent view and is big. The garden is a wonderful rambly big thing - so relaxing and pretty to walk around. And the ability to walk through neighbours farms or directly up on the mountain and its trails is fantastic. The hosts and the staff were also excellent. I highly recommend it. (Only two gripes: You can hear the traffic on the highway a bit though, and a belt of the mountainside you can see from the guest house is full of alien vegetation which would be wonderful if it was cleared so the fynbos could grow there instead)

An incredible location with impeccable service, food and artwork. Old world charm you don’t often find these days. We loved our stay and walking the Green Mountain Trail. Highly recommended

It would be hard to think of a lovelier or more perfect place to spend a weekend of making and being than at Wildekrans. There is the landscape and walks, the history, the generous spaces and delicious food, the truly wonderful staff. But then also, the surprise of art placed quietly through the gardens and interiors, and not least, the pleasure of Alison and Barrie themselves. I can't imagine not loving it, and not leaving restored and awakened. A treat from start to end.

Everything about Wildekrans is absolutely wonderful. We did and art workshop there and it is the perfect setting for creative thinking with wonderful meals and the most comfortable bed I have slept in in years. The combination of heritage architecture that is centuries old with modern comfort is hard to beat!!
