About the garden

Discover the rich history behind Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden. With origins dating back to 1921, the 4.2-acre space is South Africa’s oldest university botanical garden.

The award-winning Garden is renowned for its efforts in conserving plant diversity as well as specific species. At Stellenbosch, in addition to an inviting atmosphere, you will find a wide variety of both native and exotic flora, from golden Cape Oxalis and vivid Pelargoniums to unique Bonsais. Look out for the Becky Lucas Pine Tree – thought to be Africa’s oldest Bonsai. Enter the Tropical Glasshouse and you’ll see stunning Orchids, explore the dedicated Fern House and relax by the soothing Lily Ponds in this glorious oasis. A selection of beautiful plants that can be seen in the Garden are also for sale.

Complete your visit with satisfying soups and scrumptious cakes inside the cosy Katjiepiering Restaurant during winter and tuck into delicious salads and light bites among greenery or lounge on the Picnic Lawn in warmer months.

This is a lovely restaurant inside the botanical garden. Unless you know this actually exists, you will never know about it. But it is very unique in a sense that you dine under the tree and it is great in any time of the year.

Loved it!! Beautiful and peaceful garden... good for the soul. Lots to see, touch, smell.. Ended with some good coffee made by a passionate barista at the restaurant.

Beautiful botanical gardens with exquisite plant life. Wheelchair friendly paths though not all. Affordable entrance fee of R15 and R10 for pensioners.

Entry is R15pp for non Stellenbosch varsity students. A lovely little garden. We walked here from our accommodation as everything is so close. The Bonsai garden was truly spectacular! Great place.

Probably a cliché to call this an urban oasis but it is. Once you entered the garden, you can hardly hear the outside noise and with the many shady corners, it is easy to understand why there are always people around. The garden has a diverse collection of plants and I love seeing the garden change with the seasons. It is very peaceful and someplace we regularly return to. Intrigued to see what the new flowerbeds at the Neethling street entrance will look like once completed.
