About the garden

A place to reflect. Hidden away in countryside close to Dorchester lies the peace and serenity of Sculpture by the Lakes, 26 acres of botanical gardens dotted with inspiring contemporary sculptures.

Wander the grounds and discover more than 30 permanent pieces by acclaimed sculptor Simon Gudgeon, designed to be viewed outside in the changing light. Follow trails that lead through woodland and among formal borders. Then visit the three galleries in the park to view ever-changing displays by international and local artists.

Created to instil a sense of wellbeing, these are gardens designed to be savoured. Bring a picnic and find your favourite spot by the water. Or enjoy the ‘field to plate’ ethos of the Gallery Café, with produce grown just a few feet away in the kitchen garden. Workshops and events throughout the year are closely linked to the local arts; the Dorset Arts Festival in July celebrates the artists and crafters of the area.

U14s and Babies Policy

Unfortunately, Sculpture by the Lakes is not permitted to allow access for children under 14, including babies. There is a lot of deep water and a fast flowing river, so the danger of accidents is too great a risk. We regret the inconvenience and hope that parents will understand that this mandatory restriction is in place to protect their children.

Opening times

1 April - 30 September Wednesday - Sunday 10AM - 5PM 1 Oct - 23 Dec & 1 Feb - 31 Mar Tuesday - Saturday 10AM - 5PM

I decided to visit Sculpture by the Lakes as I'd seen Instagram posts and thought it looked stunning. Wow oh wow, it not only didn't disappoint but exceeded all of my expectations. It was the most wonder, tranquil, beautifully thought out place and I found the whole experience truly exhilarating, would totally recommend visiting if you love art, open space and wildlife!

What a fabulous place! Just beautiful. Sculptures are amazing - as soon as I win the lottery I know where my money is going!! Great coffee and cake as well. Definitely going back when weather is better. Highly recommend.

Didn't know what to expect but completely charmed. Beautiful, extensive site, complemented by intriguing and original sculptures. Very peaceful and unhurried. Good food and coffee: interesting shop: lovely gallery. Dog walkers and those with children will have to look elsewhere. Apart from that I would heartily recommend this spot. Selfishly I hope it doesn't become too well-known!

Really beautiful and tranquil place with lots of places to take nice pictures. Very helpful staff and nice cafe (although quite expensive). Worth taking a picnic and relaxing here with good company (alcohol is permitted on site).

A really special place. Hired the Island for Birthday treat and ambled at leisure around the grounds and sculptures, then retreated for picnic and cake. A memorable day. Thank you.
