About the garden

Occupied since Roman times, the gardens at Iford Manor were designed by Harold Peto, an Edwardian architect who also lived here from 1899-1933. Inspired by his visits to Japan and Italy, Peto used steep hillside and old terraces to create a romantic garden, complete with classical architectural and statuary features, including fountains, pools, figures and urns, loggias and colonnades. The terraces are linked by steep flights of stairs and overlook the magnificent Iford Valley.

The Cartwright-Hignett family, who now own the garden, have restored it, adding the Italian parterre, woodland walks and new Japanese Garden. The new head gardener, Troy Scott-Smith, is also working with the family to restore the Georgian woodland walks and expand the garden further, all with a firm eye on conservation and ecological sustainability.

Absolutely stunning place. I never knew it existed. I was driving to the American museum when I saw the sign for iPhone manor. I couldn't believe my eyes when I got to the bottom beautiful stone bridge over a small river and a beautiful manor house. We had wonderful lunch and a wonderful time and I would recommend it to all the family.

Iford Manor gardens was definitely worth the 20-year wait for us to finally be able to visit. Tucked away in a fold in the Somerset/Wiltshire hills, the house glows in the sunshine and the wisterias must be amazing in May. Italianate terraces, buildings, sculpture and trees arranged up the hillside provide new views and vistas at every turn. The Japanese garden was a surprise and water pools or trickles in lots of different places. The cloister was a true delight and transported us to a Mediterranean courtyard. The new (?) cafe was extremely smart, with seating out in a split-level courtyard and inside too, if needed. The staff were really welcoming. Well done Iford - you did not disappoint 😊

What a gorgeous garden. We came today and loved it. Lovely new cafe and kitchen. Car park bit messy but worth it to see the garden. Such polite and helpful staff too.

A lovely couple of hours spent wandering around these lovely well kept gardens. There is so much to see, some of which is tucked away in the shadows. Walk slowly and keep looking. Not to worry if you miss something, it will give you a good excuse to go back another day.

Beautiful natural gardens split into different design areas - Italian, Japanese. Take care on the approach roads as one vehicle wide so reversing made feature! Guide/owner was excellent with great knowledge & good humour!
