About the garden

An organic woodland garden with gorgeous views onto the sea, Greencombe stretches along the tree-covered slopes below Exmoor. This sheltered hillside garden is a little known Somerset gem, close to the quaint harbour village of Porlock Weir.

Under a canopy of deciduous trees, paths meander through an impressive collection of camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas, maples, lilies, roses, clematis, and hydrangeas. This pioneering organic garden packs in four national plant collections; (Erythroniums, Polystichum ferns, Vaccinium and Gaultheria) and one magnificent champion tree (the English Holly). With such gorgeous vistas and equally esteemed planting, Greencombe Gardens is one of the loveliest things to do in Porlock.

Expect mossy pathways snaking past overflowing borders which wind their way through a canopy of Oak, Conifer and Sweet Chestnuts. The late owner Joan Loraine really did break new ground when she took on this plot in 1966. Not only eschewing weed killers and chemical fertilisers, but overseeing the production of 25 to 30 tonnes of home produced compost and leaf-mould each year! While we don’t envy that job, we do envy this delightful garden, which has become a haven for people and wildlife alike.

Wanted to visit here for a long time and got in just before it closes at end of July. Fantastic display of hydrangeas of various colours. Views over Bristol Channel to Wales. Will definitely go back again in the spring next year

Nice small woodland garden with vegetable area and paths to a nice surprise! £1 for kids is great but £7 per adult is slightly steep. However it's free with a RHS membership which us adults had.

An interesting place to visit if you are passing through Porlock - The gardens are a bit small for the price you pay to get in, but it all goes towards keeping everything maintained. Very friendly staff and well worth going to on a hot day, as there is a lot of shade to keep you cool!

Small but very pretty gardens, near Porlock. Lovely views from the gardens to the sea. Takes about 30 to 40 minutes to walk around, on average. It is a long thin plot with paths on several levels. We took about 45 minutes, but stopped for photos and to look at things in detail. Beautiful rhodedendrons and azaleas. Quite shady woodland paths, some covered in moss which are a bit slippery in places.
