About the garden

De Hoop is one of the largest natural areas managed by CapeNature. This beautiful reserve is a favourite for hikers, cyclists, and bird and whale watchers. The reserve, which is 34 000 hectares, is just three hours from Cape Town, in the Overberg.

The neighbouring marine reserve, which extends 5km out to sea, is one of the largest marine protected areas in Africa. It conserves a vast and fascinating variety of marine life. The reserve is a World Heritage Site.

De Hoop has one of the best hiking trails in South Africa: the Whale Trail. This route offers coastal and mountain walking, with spectacular views and, of course, plenty of opportunities for whale watching. This route is a five-day trail featuring well-equipped accommodation on each of the five nights, including the newly-built Noetsie cottages, which are your stopover between days two and three.

Very well equipped and comfortable accommodation. The wild fig restaurant serves fantastic food and the chef Mercia is absolutely brilliant. F&B manager Clint very friendly and offer great service.

What an amazing place. Cape Nature and it's staff are immense. Their parks are clean, well managed, staff are friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about being in the reserve. I really am impressed everytime I've had the pleasure of visiting.

Even with bad weather it is worth visiting. We stayed here at the Vlei cottages for two nights. Unfortunately it rained every day and so we did not get to do any of the walks. Nevertheless we enjoyed it a lot. The beach there is very unique and worth the walk, even in the rain. As it is remote we took all the meals at the concession, and it was the best food we had at any accommodation along the Western Cape for two weeks. We had every breakfast and dinner there and they were excellent meals. I would like to go back sometime when we can do the nature walks.

A truly special place! We thoroughly enjoyed watching the baby ostriches right in front of our cottage and seeing the whales while we enjoyed a picnic on the white dunes. This is based on our last visit, each time offers a unique experience and wonderful memories.

This is a very special place. There is so much water in the estuary. I've never seen it this full. The eland have multiplied and the beach is as beautiful as ever. Even though completely untouched you can see how our oceans are being polluted by plastic waste. Fantastic spot for a mountain bike ride and trail run too.
